Synopsis

The Amazon region holds a vast wealth of ancestral knowledge on medicinal plants; however, much of this ethnobotanical richness lacks scientific validation through experimental evidence. Therefore, this study evaluated the phytochemical profile, antimicrobial activity, and hemolytic effects of ethanolic extracts from dried leaves of two varieties of Fittonia albivenis (white-veined and pink-veined). Ethanolic extracts obtained through maceration, Soxhlet extraction, concentration using a rotary evaporator, and lyophilization were subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening, antimicrobial assays by agar diffusion, antifungal tests using resazurin-based microdilution, and cytotoxicity analysis via hemolysis in human erythrocytes. Results showed that the white-veined variety yielded higher extraction efficiency, whereas the pink-veined variety contained higher levels of flavonoids and alkaloids. In antimicrobial assays, the pink-veined variety exhibited strong inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus. Both extracts demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition against Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus fumigatus at higher concentrations, while hemolytic activity was minimal. These findings support the therapeutic potential of F. albivenis as a source of natural bioactive compounds.
