Evaluation of the impact of tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) on the native ichthyofauna of the Andean Chocó

Synopsis

The introduction of species is one of the main causes of biodiversity loss worldwide. Tilapias (Oreochromis spp.), native to Africa, have been introduced into multiple ecosystems outside their natural range, and their negative impact on native fish species has been well documented. In Ecuador, however, information on their effects remains limited. This study evaluated the possible impacts of tilapia on native fish in a local Ecuadorian community. Water bodies were surveyed for established tilapia populations, but no positive findings were recorded. Subsequently, four experiments were conducted with O. niloticus and native species, measuring survival as the main variable. In the first experiment, there was a 62% reduction in native fish and an 18% reduction in tilapia. The other trials showed no significant differences in survival. In conclusion, although some evidence of potential negative effects was identified, the results are not conclusive enough to affirm that O. niloticus is significantly affecting the evaluated native species.
